Preparing for your shoot
You’ve made the decision to invest in a professional family photo shoot, so what happens next?
Once your booking has been confirmed, I will send you my tips on ‘what to wear’ along with my price list, so you can start to think about the many ways in which you might want to display your beautiful family photos in your home.
In the week prior to your shoot, I will drop you a line to arrange a convenient time to call so that we can recap on all the details for your shoot. During this telephone consultation, I will take the opportunity to find out as much as I can about your children, what they like, love and enjoy, this helps me to build rapport with them quickly when we meet and get things off to a flying start. We will also talk about your hopes and aspirations for the shoot, perhaps you are a Mum who is always behind the camera, and would like the focus to be on pictures of you and your children, whatever it is you hope to achieve from the shoot, I will write it all down and ensure that I deliver for you. If you don’t have a location in mind I can suggest one from the many lovely places I have had the opportunity to shoot.
It seems like an obvious thing to say, but it’s a good idea to prepare your children for their photo shoot, let them know it’s happening perhaps a day or two in advance. It needs no more information really than we are going for a family walk in the park on Saturday, and a nice lady is going to take some photos of us together. Something along those lines.
Once we meet I will have a route for our shoot already planned. I take great care to ensure that your shoot is different to the last and unique to your family. You should expect a family photo shoot to take around an hour to an hour and a half.
My approach is to keep everyone animated, happy and interacting. Through a combination of reportage and posed shots I will capture the joy and the love in your family, in timeless images for you to enjoy forever.
I do need to direct you for your shots, but I do this using relaxed techniques like asking everyone to give the person next to them a big hug or tickle, rub noses, hug daddies leg.. I will pose you to an extent, but ultimately I am looking to capture the natural relationships in your family unit, and just want you to be yourselves.
You will find that I talk incessantly, and will pretty much do or say anything to get that shot! Having two young daughters myself, I am quite a master in the art of make believe, so we may well be looking for elves or fairies on our photo shoot as well as taking photos.
What happens next?
My next job is to beautifully edit all the best images from your shoot, and make them available on an online gallery for you to share with friends and family, and decide what you would like to order. A family photo shoot gallery will typically include 50 or more images. Your gallery will be live for one week.
How to display your images
Looking at a gallery full of beautiful images is very nice, but it’s working out where and how to display them that really requires some thought. When I send you your gallery, I will include a storyboard layout for a framing suggestion, just to provide you with some food for thought as to how you might put your images together.
Once you have decided what you would like to order, your product will be with you within 3 weeks of payment being received and the order then being placed. Prints and the digital gallery can be delivered much quicker but bespoke framing, canvases etc take longer. Click here for more ideas on how to display your images.
